The Path to Climate Neutrality
Is electric mobility actually good for our environment?
The fact is: A combustion engine requires an exhaust pipe from which the polluting exhaust gasses are released into the environment. Electric vehicles in particular, which are powered by electricity from renewable energy sources, make a major contribution to protecting the environment, as they naturally do not have any exhaust or exhaust fumes.
As far as the climate targets are concerned, a combination of electric mobility and regenerative energy sources is ideal for saving CO2 in an environmentally friendly way. Above all, the electricity mix decides whether an electric vehicle performs better in terms of climate balance than a combustion engine. Although it is emission-free, the power plants do emit greenhouse gasses when providing the electricity for charging, at least when fossil fuels are used. Fortunately, more and more renewable energies are being used to generate electricity in Germany. In 2019, their share was already around 42 percent and soon, for the first time, more than half of the electricity in Germany will come from renewable sources.
unu Scooter - for more environmental protection on the streets
If you are out and about with an electric scooter from unu, you not only drive more relaxed and stress-free through the urban jungle, you are also doing something good for the environment. For comparison: There are currently almost 2 million petrol mopeds with high emissions on the road in Germany. These vehicles are responsible for a large part of air pollution in cities and for a disproportionate amount of traffic emissions. Recent studies show that they produce 10 times more CO emissions and over 3 times more NOx emissions than petrol cars, among other things, and that banning petrol mopeds can reduce air pollutants by over 80%. For this reason, many cities have already set up zones where petrol vehicles are no longer allowed to drive.
In order to ensure more sustainability, emissions from production at unu have been offset since 2020. How exactly does this work? By March 2022, together with ClimatePartner, we will have precisely recorded the CO2 emissions of the scooters, batteries and charging stations. The raw materials, logistics, packaging and disposal are considered according to the usual cradle-to-gate plus end-of-life approach. Since April 2022 we are partnering with PlanA to track our carbon emissions.
The Path to Climate Neutrality
unu adopts a comprehensive approach to reduce CO2 emissions in production and shipping, and some unavoidable emissions are partly offset through supporting climate protection projects. Climate protection initiatives may involve reforestation efforts or replacing climate-damaging technologies with eco-friendly alternatives. The result is a climate-friendly product.
Conveniently, unu scooters can be charged at home using charging stations, ideally powered by green electricity. This combination of electric mobility and sustainable charging practices further contributes to reducing the environmental impact of urban transportation.
